Through the Cracks presents the African landscape as a surreal world where the boundaries of nature itself seem to be breaking apart.

A magnificent rhinoceros emerges through the landscape, its horn pushing through the earth as though the African terrain were a fragile sheet of paper. Around it, a family of cheetahs and other wildlife inhabit a world that is both beautiful and strangely vulnerable. In the distance, rolling fog surrounds a waterfall beneath an eclipsed moon, adding an atmosphere of mystery and uncertainty.

The surreal landscape becomes a metaphor for the fragile existence of endangered wildlife. The animals appear to be breaking through the very world they are struggling to survive in—a reminder that their future depends upon preserving the land they call home.

Through the Cracks is part of Rick Garcia's ALMOST GONE Endangered Species Collection, a series of paintings created to bring attention to the beauty, vulnerability, and uncertain future of threatened wildlife.
